چکیده

This paper describes methods for adapting the scanning order through wavelet transform values used in the Wavelet Difference Reduction (WDR) algorithm of Tian and Wells. These new methods are called Adaptively Scanned Wavelet Difference Reduction (ASWDR). ASWDR adapts the scanning procedure used by WDR in order to predict locations of significant transform values at half thresholds. These methods retain all of the important features of WDR: lowcomplexity, region of interest, embeddedness, and progressive SNR. They improve the rate-distortion performance of WDR so that it is essentially equal to that of the SPIHT algorithm of Said and Pearlman when arithmetic compression is not employed. When arithmetic compression is used, then the rate-distortion performance of the ASWDR algorithms is only slightly worse than SPIHT. The perceptual quality of ASWDR images is clearly superior to SPIHT.

Wavelet-Based Image Compression with Polygon-Shaped Region of Interest

A wavelet-based lossy-to-lossless image compression technique with polygon-shaped ROI function is proposed. Firstly, split and mergence algorithms are proposed to separate concave ROIs into smaller convex ROIs. Secondly, row-order scan and an adaptive arithmetic coding are used to encode the pixels in ROIs. Thirdly, a lifting integer wavelet transform is used to decompose the original image in ...

Generalized Wavelet Decompositions in Image Compression : ArbitrarySubbands

New methods for lossy image compression based on generalized wavelet decompositions have been introduced recently. Unlike in the classical wavelet decomposition scheme it is possible to use diierent scaling and wavelet functions at every scale by using non-stationary multiresolution analyses. This freedom in using diierent functions can be exploited for adaptive compression techniques. In this ...

Comparison of the JPEG2000 lossy image compression algorithm with WDR-based algorithms

We compare the new still-image compression standard, JPEG2000, with two competing algorithms based on the Wavelet Difference Reduction (WDR) technique of encoding. Our comparison shows that these WDR methods provide far simpler encoding while also providing essentially the same performance as JPEG2000 at moderately high to very high compression ratios. They provide useful alternative algorithms...

Experiments in Simple One-Dimensional Lossy Image Compression Schemes

This paper examines some one-dimensional lossy image compression schemes. To perform one-dimensional compression, an image is scanned into a one-dimensional array which is then compressed. Three types of scanning are considered: raster scan, Hilbert scan, and binary scan. Hilbert and binary scan are found to outperform raster scan. The methods considered for compression are integer wavelet tran...

A Comparative Study of Various Image Compression Techniques

: Image compression may be lossy or lossless. Lossless compression is preferred for archival purposes and often for medical imaging, technical drawings, clip art, or comics. Lossy compression methods, especially when used at low bit rates, introduce compression artifacts. Lossy methods are especially suitable for natural images such as photographs in applications where minor (sometimes impercep...
